The Office of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of the UNC School of Medicine (UNC SOM) supports the mission of the School of Medicine, to “improve the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians and others whom the School serves,” specifically through physician continuing education. By applying the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) criteria and other best practices in medical education to the planning and implementation of educational activities, CPD works closely with UNC SOM faculty to offer continuing medical education of the highest quality. CPD offers support and CME credit for regularly scheduled series (such as grand rounds and case conferences), annual and one-time events, web-based activities, and a variety of other educational formats. CPD administers the ACCME accreditation for the UNC SOM, most recently receiving another full four-year accreditation decision in 2024 from the ACCME.

For academic year 2024-25 CPD provided credit for 101 regularly scheduled series, 22 one time and annual courses, and 38 Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety program (TeamSTEPPS ) sessions, spread across 40 departments, centers, and other organizations, including UNC Medical Center and two UNC Health hospitals. CPD awarded credit to 33,253 participants in academic year 2024-25: 23578 physicians and 9675 non-physicians.
