Thomas Koonce, MD, MPH, has been appointed associate dean of admissions and will begin the role July 1.
Dr. Koonce currently serves as associate chief medical officer for outpatient services for the faculty practice at UNC Medical Center and is a professor in the Department of Family Medicine. He leads the department’s nationally acclaimed Faculty Development Fellowship for family medicine faculty from across the country and previously served as vice chair for education. He has held numerous leadership positions in the School of Medicine, including director of the Patient Centered Care course and of the foundation phase curriculum
As associate dean, he will lead the recruitment, admission, and enrollment of prospective medical students at the UNC School of Medicine. He will work closely with the senior director for admissions, the admissions team, and colleagues across the Office of Medical Student Education and UNC Chapel Hill.
A Morehead Scholar as an undergraduate at UNC, Dr. Koonce went on to earn his MD from the UNC School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Pitt County Memorial Hospital before returning to UNC, where he has served as faculty ever since.
