Kenan Penaskovic, MD, and Kelly Smith, MD, have been named School of Medicine assistant deans for student affairs.

Kenan Penaskovic, MD

Penaskovic and Smith will provide leadership for all student affairs matters including career advising, academic assistance, student progress, financial aid, registration and academic events. Additionally, they will provide support, services and resources for medical students across all phases of the medical curriculum.

Kelly Lacy Smith, MD

Penaskovic is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and has served since 2020 as the department’s associate vice chair for clinical affairs and director of inpatient psychiatry services. Penaskovic received his Bachelor of Science from Auburn University and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

Smith is an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine and has served in various roles in the School of Medicine’s Office of Academic Excellence; UNC Academy of Educators; and Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia and her Doctor of Medicine from Virginia Commonwealth University.
