The School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a highly qualified leader to serve as its Director for the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases (IGHID). This is an internal search and is only open to faculty with primary appointments at UNC-Chapel Hill.

IGHID was founded by Dr. Myron S. Cohen in 2007 at the request of the UNC Chancellor to promote UNC Chapel Hill as a leading global university. IGHID has been among the most successful research organizations at UNC with total grant funding exceeding $450 million between 2020-2025. IGHID has strong programs in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. IGHID supports faculty in clinical, research and education activities across all health science schools and the UNC College of Arts and Sciences. IGHID has received particular recognition for programs in infectious diseases (HIV, COVID-19, malaria, and emerging pathogens), mental health, women’s health, oncology, and surgery. IGHID also serves as the home of a large network of international training programs with 12 separate NIH Training Awards and the SOM Global Health Training Program.

The Director will report directly to the School of Medicine Executive Dean and the Vice Dean for Research. The Director is expected to collaborate with the leadership of all health science schools, the UNC College of Arts and Sciences, UNC Global, and the UNC Office of the Provost.

 

Major Responsibilities:

The selected individual will provide leadership and organization of a multi-disciplinary group of several hundred faculty, students, and staff, including faculty and adjunct faculty at all ranks, and contract employees worldwide.

The Center Director will provide leadership in the following areas:

  1. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and multi-disciplinary research culture
  2. Develop a unifying vision for the future of IGHID in collaboration with all units at UNC, and the State of North Carolina
  3. Promote national and international visibility of the Institute
  4. Oversee Institute grants, contracts and donations and attract additional financial resources
  5. Support faculty development, new recruits, and trainees
  6. Build and expand research infrastructure in Chapel Hill and at all global sites

 

  1. Oversee the operations of UNC international sites, understand the individual complexity of each global site, and ensure provision of a robust research environment in compliance with UNC and federal policies.
  2. Promote core services / shared equipment resources
  3. Serve on the Board of the UNC Global LLCs organizations, and all related SOM and University Advisory Committees

Qualifications

  • A physician scientist with an M.D. or M.D/Ph.D. degree
  • This is an internal search only. The candidate must have a primary faculty appointment at UNC Chapel Hill.
  • Distinguished record of research accomplishment in both infectious diseases and global health across disciplines
  • Candidates who are full professors with prior leadership experience are preferred
  • Clear demonstration of the qualities needed to lead a multifaceted academic research institute
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and support students and trainees at different stages and in multiple disciplines
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage professional staff team
  • Demonstrated ability to develop programmatic and large scale grants and contracts and to work with different stakeholders, including NC Department of Health and Human Services, federal government agencies (e.g., NIH, CDC, NSF), industry and contract research organizations, and international philanthropic funding organizations (e.g., Gates Foundation)
