The University of North Carolina School of Medicine (SOM) seeks an innovative and collaborative educational leader to serve as the Director of the Academy of Educators (AOE). Reporting to the Senior Director of Faculty Development in the Office of Faculty Affairs & Leadership Development (FALD), the Director of the AOE is responsible for the oversight, coordination, and continuous improvement of the AOE.

The Director of the AOE will lead the AOE in advancing their mission to promote and support excellence in teaching; to promote and fund curricular innovation, evidence-based curricular change, and a scholarly approach to the education mission of the SOM; and to provide a forum for education leadership.

This is a 15% administrative leadership appointment with a four-year term, reviewed annually.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preside at AOE meetings and at any meetings of the AOE Leadership Council
  • Engage with the FALD team, attending monthly team meetings, and the annual retreat
  • Partner with FALD colleagues to integrate AOE and FALD programming and initiatives, develop and oversee the annual budget, and contribute to annual reporting efforts
  • Assure the successful delivery of AOE activities such as visiting professors, faculty development opportunities, grant awards, and the annual Evening of Scholarship
  • Continuously evaluate the leadership structure and propose any changes that could lead to organizational improvements and effectiveness
  • Annually examine and revise (if needed) the key roles and responsibilities for leadership positions within the AOE
  • Coordinate with the Novant Faculty Development Liaison and AOE Leadership Council to prioritize, assess, and meet preceptor development needs of Novant partners at both the Charlotte and Wilmington sites
  • Assess the effectiveness of AOE offerings and recommend any changes that are indicated, including opportunities for increased alignment with FALD programming and initiatives
  • Develop and disseminate scholarly products; contribute to growing the AOE’s reputation nationally

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD, DO, MD/PhD, or PhD with demonstrated qualifications and experience in medical, biomedical, and/or and health professions education
  • Faculty appointment in one of the UNC School of Medicine departments
  • Active member of the Academy of Educators preferred
  • Demonstrated record of educational leadership and/or innovation
