Christina Shenvi, MD, PhD

  • Hometown: Don’t have one 🙂 Born in Kenya, and lived in Kenya, the Sudan, and Cyprus prior to moving to the US for college. Now have lived in NJ, CA, CT, and NC for undergrad, PhD, MD, and work.
  • Residency location: UNC
  • EM passion/interests: geriatrics, productivity, and time management
  • Clinically based at UNC
  • Hobbies: 4 kids, crafts, reading, previously competitive ballroom dancing
  • APD since 2014
  • I love working with residents and seeing them go from interns with little experience but lots of potential to graduating seniors who are full of experience, confidence, and resilience. My favorite part of being an APD is forming relationships with the residents and helping mentor them through residency and beyond to successful lives as physicians. I love watching them gain confidence as they gain experience, and watching the lights turn on as they start to understand difficult concepts or as they translate classroom-learning to bedside practice.

Gary Burke, MD, MPH

  • I have been at UNC for 11 years (1 year MPH, 4 years MD, 3 years residency, and starting 4th year on faculty). Starting my 3rd year as APD and 1st year as Medical Director for the UNC Medical Center Emergency Department.
  • UNC EM is a family and that was a major reason I stayed from residency and as faculty. I enjoy the on-shift teaching time and teaching the residents about admin and business side of medicine.

  • Emergency Physicians have one of the coolest jobs on the planet. To be able to be there for you fellow man, during their greatest hour of need and help them no matter who they are or where they came from, is an honor like no other. Having the opportunity to teach residents to do the same is one of the greatest joys of my life.
