Position Summary
The University of North Carolina School of Medicine seeks an accomplished, collaborative, and strategic academic leader to serve as Vice Dean for Education. Reporting to the Executive Dean, the Vice Dean for Education provides strategic leadership and oversight for the School of Medicine’s education enterprise in support of its mission to improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians and the communities it serves.
The Vice Dean for Education is responsible for the direction, integration, and continuous improvement of the School’s educational programs and is expected to translate institutional priorities into executable strategies, measurable outcomes, and sustained performance across the education continuum. The Vice Dean works in close partnership with senior leaders across the School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
This is an 80% administrative leadership role (0.8 FTE), with the remaining effort aligned with faculty responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide executive leadership and strategic oversight for the following areas:
- Undergraduate Medical Education (MD Program) (4 campuses across the state)
- Department of Health Sciences educational programs (8 Divisions)
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Continuing Medical Education (CME)
- Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
- The UME-to-GME transition in collaboration with Graduate Medical Education leadership
- Lead innovation and continuous improvement across the education mission, including curriculum development, learner assessment, and educational technologies.
- Collaborate with academic and clinical leaders to ensure high-quality curricula, learner support, and strong program outcomes.
- Promote data-informed decision-making, educational scholarship, and faculty development.
- Serve as Faculty Accreditation Lead for the LCME accreditation cycle, including preparation for the April 2028 site visit.
- Foster a professional, collaborative learning environment aligned with institutional values and mission priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
- MD, DO, or MD/PhD with demonstrated qualifications and experience in medical and/or and health professions education
- Primary faculty appointment in one of the UNC School of Medicine departments at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor
- Demonstrated record of successful academic and administrative leadership in a complex academic medical center, including experience leading organizational change.
- Demonstrated excellence in communication, collaboration, and interprofessional leadership
- Experience with accreditation processes, including LCME accreditation.
