What is Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry?
Consultation-Liaison (CL) Psychiatry is a subspecialty of psychiatry that bridges the gap between mental health and physical illness. Formerly known as Psychosomatic Medicine, it focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders in patients with complex medical conditions.
CL psychiatrists address a variety of issues, including:
Comorbid Psychiatric and Medical Conditions: When present, each can complicate the management of the other.
Somatoform and Functional Disorders: Conditions where physical symptoms are present without a clear, identified underlying medical explanation.
Psychiatric Disorders Secondary to Medical Conditions: Mental health issues that arise as a direct result of a medical illness or its treatment.
While previously associated with clinical psychiatric care and education in inpatient medical and surgical settings, CL psychiatry now provides direct patient care and education in research, academic, outpatient, community, and virtual settings.
CL psychiatrists also serve as members of interdisciplinary teams, collaborating (i.e. liaising) with medical and surgical colleagues to improve patient outcomes and champion innovative care models. Their unique expertise makes them well-suited for leadership positions in healthcare systems, policy development, and advocacy.
In essence, CL psychiatry provides specialized care for patients facing complex challenges at the intersection of mental health and physical illness.
