Southeastern Rural Vocational Experiences (S.E.R.V.E.) was created in 2022 supported through the Novant Health, UNC Health, and UNC School of Medicine partnership. The programs are led through the UNC Office of Rural Initiatives (ORI) in collaboration with community partners and schools in Southeastern North Carolina to develop a future healthcare workforce through the exposure and connection of pathways for students. Programs reach students across middle school to undergraduate educational spaces and seek to provide engagement and opportunity for students to explore healthcare careers.

Heal Day with the Heels invites students from five southeastern counties (Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, and Pender) including students from high schools, community college, and four-year institutions to spend a day at UNC. During the day, students experience and learn more about primary care in North Carolina and medical school at UNC. Students have the opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals, engage in skills activities with current medical students, and learn more about programs at UNC seeking to increase the primary care provider workforce to meet the needs of patients across North Carolina.
