Three fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologists share the care of young children with problems of the ears, nose, and throat at UNC Hospitals. They are Amelia F. Drake, MD, Carlton J. Zdanski, MD., and Austin S. Rose, MD.
Dr. Drake, who is the Chief of the Divison of Pediatric Otolaryngology, did her subspecialty training at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Both Dr. Zdanski and Dr. Rose received their medical degrees and completed residency training in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at UNC. Dr. Zdanski then went on to complete a fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, while Dr. Rose completed his at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. All three offer unique and combined care to the child with problems of the ears, nose, and throat.
Dr. Zdanski is currently investigating the mechanisms of hearing and hearing loss. He performs cochlear implants and bone-anchored hearing aids. Dr. Rose's research interests include airway pathology and the etiology and treatment of subglottic stenosis. Dr. Drake serves as Director of the UNC Craniofacial Center. All three pediatric otolaryngologists offer the spectrum of pediatric otolaryngologic surgical care, including complex airway surgical reconstructive options to the child with laryngotracheal stenosis.
The new North Carolina Children's Airway Center offers coordinated, specialized, multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment of children with complex airway and swallowing disorders. Dr. Zdanski serves as Surgical Director. We meet weekly as a multidisciplinary airway center to specially address the needs of the child with upper airway obstruction. Whether it be a child with obstructive sleep apnea, or a child who has choked on a foreign body, or a child who presents with a trach tube in place, these patients all have wonderfully combined care in a multidisciplinary fashion in the North Carolina Children's Hospital.
