The Aging Brain Clinic (ABC)
Supporting Brain Health as You Age
As we grow older, it’s normal to notice some changes in memory and thinking. But when those changes begin to affect daily life, it’s important to take a closer look. The Aging Brain Clinic at UNC is here to help.
The Aging Brain Clinic is a team-based clinic that brings together experts in neurology, geriatrics, psychiatry, and neuropsychology. We focus on helping older adults with early memory or thinking concerns maintain their independence and quality of life.
Who We See
Most of our patients are over the age of 50 and have noticed changes in their memory or thinking within the past few years. These changes may be noticed by the individual or by a family member or caregiver. We specialize in evaluating and supporting people who may be experiencing:
- Mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
- Early signs of Alzheimer’s or other dementias
- Cognitive changes related to aging, mood, sleep, or medications
Why Early Evaluation Matters
Getting evaluated early can make a big difference. It allows us to:
- Identify treatable causes of memory changes
- Offer strategies to support brain health
- Help you and your family plan for the future
- Connect you with resources and support
What We Do
Comprehensive Care for Memory and Thinking Changes
Evaluation & Diagnosis
- Cognitive Testing – to assess memory, attention, and problem-solving
- Sleep and Behavior Assessments – to explore how sleep and mood may affect cognition
- Brain Imaging – such as MRI scans to look at brain structure and function
- Lab Tests – to check for medical conditions that may impact brain health
Personalized Interventions
Our care team focuses on the many factors that can influence brain health. We work with you to create a plan that may include:
- Improving sleep habits
- Supporting mental health
- Reviewing and adjusting medications
- Helping you adapt to cognitive changes
These interventions are typically delivered intensively over the course of one year, with regular follow-up visits coordinated between our advanced practice providers and your primary care team
Opportunities to Participate in Research
You may also have the chance to take part in clinical trials and research studies aimed at improving diagnosis and treatment for memory disorders. These include:
- Duke- UNC ADRC – studies on brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease.
- UNC Research For Me – a UNC run and organized platform for patients to find studies they may be eligible to participate in.
- UNC Neurology Memory and Cognitive Disorders Research – ongoing clinical trials focused on new therapies and diagnostics.
