John L. Schmitz, PhD
I direct the Histocompatibility and Clinical Flow Cytometry Laboratories and am Associate Director of the Clinical Microbiology/Immunology Laboratories at UNC Hospitals. These laboratories perform and consult with providers on a variety of tests for UNC Healthcare System patients with particular emphasis on immunodeficiency, infectious, allergic and autoimmune disease diagnostics, solid organ and hematopoietic cell transplantation. My teaching activities contribute to the education of laboratory staff, graduate and medical students, residents and clinical fellows in several subspecialties. In addition, I direct the UNC Hospitals Medical Laboratory Immunology Training Program that trains doctoral level individuals to direct diagnostic immunology and histocompatibility laboratories. Research interests include assessment of the impact of HLA antibodies on solid organ transplant outcomes and evaluation of novel immunodiagnostic methods. In addition, I am Associate Director of the UNC Center for AIDS Research Virology/Immunology/Microbiology Core Laboratory. This laboratory provides a variety of services to facilitate basic, translational and clinical research on HIV infection.
