The School of Medicine (SOM) web system is designed to publish official, public-facing content that supports the School’s academic, clinical, research, and administrative missions.

This page defines what types of sites and content are eligible to be published and maintained within the SOM web system and sets expectations for ongoing compliance with School and University standards.

Eligible Sites

SOM websites must represent official School of Medicine entities or initiatives, such as:

  • Academic departments, divisions, and programs
  • Research centers, institutes, and laboratories
  • Clinical programs and services
  • Education and training programs
  • Administrative units and offices
  • School-affiliated initiatives

In some cases, eligibility may depend on approval from a parent department or School of Medicine leadership.

Ineligible Sites

The following are not supported in the SOM web system:

Personal websites or individual projects – use University-supported platforms such as Tar Heels Live.

Research websites that recruit patients or collect patient data – these activities require secure, compliant systems. Use approved platforms such as NC TraCS and PRO Core instead.
