All School of Medicine websites include a three-column footer area that displays at the bottom of every page across the site. This area is used for important site-wide content. At a minimum, all SOM sites should include contact information in the site footer.

Understanding the Two Footers

School of Medicine websites include two separate footer areas.

SOM Footer (Blue Background)

The footer with the blue background is the global School of Medicine footer. This footer is managed centrally by the SOM IT Web Team and is consistent across all SOM websites.

This footer cannot be customized or edited on a per-site basis.

Site Footer (Dark Gray Background)

The footer with the dark gray background is the site-specific footer. This is the footer area that each site manages independently using widgets.

Content commonly added to the site footer includes:

  • Contact information
  • Social media links
  • Directions or parking information
  • Appointment information
  • Donation links
  • Related resources

This documentation refers to the site footer.

Add a New Widget

Most SOM sites use the Text widget to add footer content.

To add a widget:

  1. Locate the Text widget on the left side of the Widgets screen
  2. You can add it to the Footer widget area using either of the following methods:
    • Drag and Drop – Drag the widget into the Footer widget area on the right side of the screen
    • Add Widget Button – Click on the Text widget, select Footer from the pop-up menu, then click Add Widget
  3. Enter the desired content
  4. Click Save

Best Practices

  • Keep footer content concise and easy to scan
  • Avoid overcrowding the footer with too much content
  • Ensure links use descriptive text
  • Periodically review footer information for accuracy
